Relational Prepositions

Overview:

A relational preposition is a preposition that is used with the particular name / role of God and tells us something about our relationship with God.  For example, the phrase in Christ  is used in sentences, of the word of God,  which tell us of blessings which are only received when we are in proper relationship with Christ.  Ministers of Satan and deceived people claim that people can receive these blessings even while they refuse to do their duty to maintain their relationship with Christ.  Thus, this is a reference work which helps God's people find and understand what they are commanded to do in order to maintain their own personal relationship with God and in order to know and understand the blessings which the word of God  promises to those people who fulfill God's requirements.

This Study is not yet complete.  However, it does provide links to notes within other Studies, on this web site, which explain the sentence which contains the given phrase.  Those explanations cover the contextual considerations, sentence considerations and provide links to related references in the word of God.  However, those notes may or may not emphasize the relational preposition.  Lord willing, before I die, I will complete this Study with at least a couple of sentences which explain how the relational preposition is used within the sentence and how it matches other places where the word of God  uses the relational preposition and how different relational prepositions tell us about different aspects to our personal relationship with God.

All of the Bible tells us about our relationship with God, and all of the New Testament tells us about our personal relationship with the Son of God through His various roles.  How He interacts with us varies depending upon the role involved.  (Please see the Lord Jesus Christ for notes on every reference to the major roles of the Son of God.)  In addition, when a preposition is attached to one of those roles, that phrase has a particular doctrinal meaning within the relationship.  That is: the use of different prepositions affect the doctrinal meaning of what is being said in that particular reference of the Bible.

This Study was started because people were preaching that we can have Christ in us while we are not in Christ.  Such claims go against the true doctrine of the word of God  and are a denial of the doctrine of the Trinity.  The true doctrine is that we can have God's Holy Spirit  even while we are not in Christ.  (This is the main doctrinal teaching of Romans 8).

An internationally known preacher wrote a book which did an excellent job (opinion of many people) of showing that our being in Christ was conditional and that we would not have the blessings, which are associated with that phrase in the Bible, without our being in Christ.  The problem was that he did not say anything about us having Christ in us, but indicated that all saved have Christ in them unconditionally and forever.  However, the exact same doctrinal arguments, that he used for our being in Christ can also be apply for saved people having Christ in them.  In addition, the blessings associated with having Christ in us are just as conditional.

Please understand, this is not a criticism of that preacher or of the many people who believe this doctrinal error.  The fact is that when he wrote the book, Baptist traditions claimed that if someone is saved then they have Christ in forever.  However, the Bible says that if someone is saved then they have God's Holy Spirit  in them forever.  God's Holy Spirit  and Christ  are two different members of the Trinity.

Unfortunately, many preachers and saved people are not spiritually mature enough to handle situations where they are showed that Bible truth goes against the traditional Baptist doctrine which they have been taught.  As a result, they can get very upset by having their error pointed out to them.

For example, many saved people are still convinced that if you're saved you have Christ in you and if you don't have Christ in you then you're not saved.  However, saved people having Christ in them and their being Christ in,  according to the Bible, is based upon if they are or are not doing their part to maintain the relationship after initial salvation.  The truth is that these are not parts of our initial salvation but are part of our sanctification after our initial salvation.  And, they have been convinced that they can 'claim' the blessings of being Christ in simply because they are saved.  However, when they don't meet God's requirements, they don'5t receive the blessings.  Then, when their experience does not match their belief, a devil convinces them that the word of God  is not reliable.  And, when discouraged, they stop trying to serve God.

There was a doctrinal dispute that, supposedly, started about 100 AD.  The 'intellectuals' at Alexandria of Egypt denied the Trinity and caused a doctrinal split in the church.  The majority of the people who denied the Trinity eventually switched to Islam, when it started.  However, this doctrinal error did not completely leave the church has persisted even until today.

Ephesians 5 teaches us that the marriage relationship between a man and his wife is a picture of the relationship between Christ and the church.  If the woman kicks the man out of the house and severs the relationship, she can't have the benefits of the relationship even though she is still married.  While Christ  will not abandon us, we can 'kick Him out' and abandon our personal relationship.  A relationship requires the participation of both parties.  If a woman is not 'in a marriage relationship', then neither is her husband.  Likewise, the Bible teaches the same thing about our being in Christ and our having Christ in us.

The problem with people understanding this simple concept is that religion has put blinders on their minds about what it the true meaning of the Trinity.  This is true for many people even while they think they accept the doctrine of the Trinity.  For example, a pastor must deal with his wife one way when they are in the bedroom but must also deal with her another way when she is one of several church members in a church meeting.  Also, people deal with a rebellious child one way while private and at home but a different way while in public.  Likewise, God deals with His children one way when they are leading others into sin and a different way when His child is encouraging others to obey God.  And, with these concepts, hopefully the reader understands that God deals with His people different ways through His different roles.

Consider that the Son of God  experiences being a weak human being but God the Father has not had that experience.  That is why the Book of Hebrews says that the Son of God  represents us to God the Father and we do not go directly to God the Father.

The basic source of this problem, in understanding the different roles of God, is the pride of man.  It is a lot easier to keep your pride when you are dealing with a 'god' who is merely a superior type of human being.  It is also easier to get people to believe that such a 'god' is so proud that he will not deal with believers directly but demands that the believers go through a priest.  Of course, this allows the priest to make up rules which supposedly came from the 'god' but which can not be verified independent of the priest.

The doctrine of the Trinity teaches that God is so vast and complex that each of the 'persons of the Trinity' that we can interact with is greater than the 'gods' of lost people.  Further, God is so vast and complex that each 'person of the Trinity' is an separate person while still being part of the single God.  In addition, God wants to deal with each of us personally and many people find that to be very frightening for many reasons and would rather deal through a priest even if the priest does make up rules.  Finally, our Bible teaches that our relationship with each person in the Trinity is different from our relationship with the other persons in the Trinity.  For example, we can get certain things from God the Father that we can not get from God the Son nor the Holy Spirit.  Likewise, what we get from God the Son and from the Holy Spirit are also unique.

Once more we run into man's pride when he refuses God's conditions and insists that he can get from one person of the Trinity, such as the Father, what God says only comes from another person of the Trinity, such as Christ,  which is a role of the Son.

I use an illustration of a bulb-light and an illustration of power to the wired bulb in order to teach these concepts to Forth Grade boys.  We can see a ceiling light and know that it is wired through a series of wires and connectors to the power generating plant.  We can also see the light switch that lets the power flow to the light or stop the flow, even though the light stays wired to the electrical system.  Saved people are the light bulb.  God the Father is like the power generating plant.  The Holy Ghost is like the wire that keeps saved people attached to the spiritual power system.  Jesus Christ  is like the variable power switch.  When we are not in Christ then Jesus Christ  cuts the power even though we are still wired to God the Father through the Holy Ghost.

With the illustration of a bulb-light, if we look at a low watt bulb when it is turned on we can see light inside of the bulb.  What's more, when the bulb is turned on, it is inside of the light that it produced.  Thus, when the power is turned on then the bulb is in the light and the light is in the bulb.  Likewise, when our relationship with Christ  is right and God's power is flowing through our life, we are in Christ and have Christ in us.  When we break fellowship with Christ,  and force Him to cut the power of God in our life, we still have the Holy Ghost in us, just like the bulb is still wired to the power plant.  However, when we break our relationship with Christ,  we are no longer in Christ and no longer have Christ in us, just like the bulb is not in the light and does not have light in it when we cut the power going over the wire to the bulb.

The Bible uses the phrases in Christ and Christ in to describe the saved person having the power of God operating in their life.  That state of being is conditional based upon how we personally maintain our relationship with God.  It is not guaranteed simply because we are saved.  Further, there are a lot of blessings from God that are given only to those saved people who are in Christ and have Christ in them.  Just as receiving the blessings of as marriage depend upon people maintaining that relationship, so also are the blessings that God says come from our relationship that is in Christ and causes us to have Christ in us.

The word in  occurs 12,674 times in 9,526 verses of the Bible.  Obviously, all of those occurrences are not included here.  What is included are verses where the word in  is used to define the relationship between man and God.  Even then, only the verses that I have identified, so far, are within the New Testament.

In addition, verses which use other prepositions ('by', 'of', 'through', etc) to describe our relationship to God are also included in this Study.  As with the word in,  many verses are not yet included.

While this document is dealing with prepositions that the Bible uses to describe our relationship to the Son of God, each of the various Book Studies, at ljc1611kjv,com, contain a table which has every occurrence of God  (the Father) in that book.  Please see those tables for information about our relationship with God the Father.

Verses using In Christ

The words in,  when associated with a name / role of God within the Bible, means: 'in relationship to'.  A relationship is between two beings with each having rights and responsibilities within the relationship.  And, each person can break the relationship by refusing to fulfill their responsibilities within the relationship.  Therefore, even though Jesus  will never leave us nor forsake us, we can destroy the relationship by refusing to fulfill our own responsibilities within the relationship.  And, with that in mind, we can see that when the Bible uses the phrase of: in Christ,  that Bible reference is telling us: 'what Christ  provides within the relationship so long as we are fulfilling our part of the relationship'.

Philippians 2 gives us specific instructions on how to be in Christ.  People can claim what they want.  But, unless they fulfill those instructions, they will not be in Christ.
  1. We must have Christ in  us in order to be in Christ1Corinthians 1:13; Ephesians 1:23 (see note on Ephesians 1:20 for the details).
  2. Multiple blessings for being in Christ  are in recorded in the notes for these verses:   Ephesians 1:3; Ephesians 1:10 (several blessings); 1:2427

  4. Faith in Christ  changes how we live and the reward that we seek.  Acts 24:24
  5. Romans 9:1:  Being in Christ  gives us the truth.
  6. We are one body in Christ  and receive gifts for the edifying of Christ's bodyRomans 12 especially Romans 12:5.  A hand can not operate when cut off from the body.  The same is true for a foot or any other part of the body.  Likewise, if we are not in Christ  ('doing our part to maintain the ongoing personal relationship with Christ') we can not use our spiritual gift.  Use of spiritual gifts requires spiritual power.  Yes, we remain saved because of the indwelling Holy Spirit.  However, any spiritual power, which we can use, comes only through Christ.  And, if we leave our relationship with Him, we also leave access to all usable spiritual power.
  7. Romans 16:7:  We are to be available for God to use our lives as an example when we are in Christ.
  8. Romans 16:9:  We are to help the preacher teach others how to spiritually mature and be in Christ.
  9. Romans 16:10:  We are to do the work of the ministry so that we are approved in Christ.
  10. We are to have the testimony of Christ confirmed in (us) So that ye ('each and every one of us personally') come behind in no gift1Corinthians 1:6
  11. We are babes in Christ  when we put the preaching of men over the literal written word of God.  1Corinthians 3:1
  12. We open ourselves to godly sarcasm when we claim to be in Christ  and are not.  1Corinthians 4:10

  14. The Lord  appoints our true instructors in Christ1Corinthians 4:17
  15. If our life in Christ  doesn't show a change then we show that those who died serving Christ  went to Hell because living in Christ  can't make an eternal difference if it doesn't make a difference here and now.  1Corinthians 15:18

  31. This sentence says ...travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you.  These Galatians were saved but no longer had Christ in  them.  This shows that someone can have Christ in  them and then lose that condition, which means that being saved and having Christ in  us are two different things.  Ephesians 1:10.
  32. We should be to the praise of his [Gold the Father's] glory  when we are in ChristEphesians 1:12

Verses using Through Christ

The word through  means: 'enter one side of a barrier and continue traveling inside until you come out the other side'.  We go through  a mountain by entering a tunnel on one side of the mountain and coming out one the other side.  Not all saved receive the things that are through Christ.  Only those people who enter their ongoing personal relationship with Christ,  that produces spiritual maturity in us, and do their part to maintain the relationship, receive these things.

  1. Romans 8:37Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.  Although this verse actually says: through him,  the prior verses identified the him  to be Christ.  Here we see that saved people become more than conquerors  only through Christ.
  2. 2Corinthians 3:4 And such trust have we through Christ to God-ward::  This sentence literally tells us that our own ability to trust  God is not sufficient.  When we put our trust through  our ongoing personal relationship with Christ,  He increase our trust  to a level that is sufficient for us to do what God wants us to do.
  3. Galatians 4:7 Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.:  This sentence tells us that the only way that we are heirs  of God is through Christ.  If we do not maintain our ongoing personal relationship with Christ,  then we will have little, or no, eternal reward from God.
  4. Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.  :This is a well-known verse that is often quoted and preached.  Unfortunately, while people like to shout about the I can do all things,  few seem to understand and believe the requirement that it be through Christ.

Verses using In Christ Jesus

The words in,  when associated with a name / role of God within the Bible, means: 'in relationship to'.  A relationship is between two beings with each having rights and responsibilities within the relationship.  And, each person can break the relationship by refusing to fulfill their responsibilities within the relationship.  Therefore, even though Jesus  will never leave us nor forsake us, we can destroy the relationship by refusing to fulfill our own responsibilities within the relationship.  And, with that in mind, we can see that when the Bible uses the phrase of: Christ in,  that Bible reference is telling us: 'what Christ  provides within the relationship so long as we are fulfilling our part of the relationship'.  These references tell us that we must do our part to fulfill our relationship with Christ  and with Jesus.  And, the emphasis is on Christ.  Therefore, God does not even offer these things until after we mature spiritually enough to satisfy God.

  1. Being in Christ Jesus  provides redemptionRomans 3:21-26.  we are continually 'bought back' from the penalty of ongoing sin only through our ongoing personal relationship that is in Christ Jesus.  If we leave this relationship, after being saved, then we will answer for these sins at the judgment seat of Christ.

  33. Grace  is in Christ Jesus   2Timothy 2:1.  This letter was written by Paul from prison when he was preparing Timothy to takes over his ministry.  This is the fifth, of eight, times that Paul uses Christ Jesus,  which the Bible uses for spiritual blessings given only to saved people who have matured through Christ  and who are following the example of Jesus  for how to live in the flesh and are obeying the spiritual lessons from Christ  which causes us to mature spiritually.  Paul starts this sentence with Thou therefore, my son  ('as a direct result of what was said in the prior chapter and because you have my character in the faith {son}').  In the prior chapter Paul started out reminding of the faith  that he received from his mother and grandmother; and the gift of God, which is in thee; and the example and teaching he had from Paul; and the testimony of others who obeyed Christ Jesus  in spite of possible persecutions.  Thus, the grace,  which is promised in this sentence, is dependent upon Timothy using all that was given to Him.  In addition, our nest sentence starts with the word and,  and it starts instructions of what Timothy is to do with this grace.  Therefore, we see the conditions which must be met before someone receives this grace  and what God expects the person to use it for.  And, all of these things require us to do our part to maintain the relationship that is in Christ Jesus.

  1. This verse tells us that God will shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us.  This verse uses Christ Jesus,  and not Jesus Christ  because this exceeding riches  is given more through our ongoing relationship with Christ  than is given at our initial salvation.  Of course, this requires us to maintain our ongoing relationship with Christ  in order for us to receive the increase of exceeding richesEphesians 2:7 That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.

Romans 6:11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.  We are personally made to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God  by entering into a relationship with Jesus Christ our Saviour  and continuing in it until we get to Heaven.
  4. Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.  We have eternal life  by entering into a relationship with Jesus Christ our Saviour  and continuing in it until we get to Heaven.
  5. Romans 7:25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Paul started, and continued, to give his thanks to God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
  6. Romans 15:17 I have therefore whereof I may glory through Jesus Christ in those things which pertain to God.  Paul could glory in those things which pertain to God  because he had entered into a relationship with Jesus Christ  and continued in it.
  7. Romans 15:17I have therefore whereof I may glory through Jesus Christ in those things which pertain to God..  Please notice the word therefore  at the beginning of this Bible reference.  God had used this ongoing personal relationship that Paul had (through Jesus Christ),  as the apostle to the Gentiles, to change the lives of the believers to whom Paul was writing.  Their changed life is what Paul wrote that pertain to God.  As a parent takes glory  in the things that they taught to their child and that their child receives recognition for achieving, so also does a pastor takes glory  in the things that God does in the lives of people that the pastor led to salvation and to spiritual growth.  In order for others to receive these things from God as a result of the work by the pastor, the pastor must maintain their ongoing personal relationship that is through Jesus Christ  so that Jesus Christ  can keep working through  the life of the pastor in order to change the lives of the church members.  We all influence others.  And, a godly pastor strives to make their influence to be something that God can work through.
  8. Romans 16:27To God only wise, be glory through Jesus Christ for ever. Amen.  We are to give glory  to God forever because of the spiritual truths which he revealed through Jesus Christ  and that He has preserved forever.  Our sentence acknowledges that God is wise.  And, our sentence says that God gets glory through Jesus Christ.  That is: as we enter our personal relationship with Jesus Christ  and do our part to maintain the relationship, He gives us God's wisdom.  As we apply God's wisdom  to our personal life, God gets glory  from our acknowledging the blessings which we get from obeying God's wisdom  and from avoiding the curse of God because we replace a sinful lifestyle with a godly lifestyle .  And, this is through Jesus Christ  because we receive God's wisdom  by following the example of Jesus  for how to live in the flesh and by obeying Christ  for how to mature spiritually and for how the serve God.
  9. Galatians 3:14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.  We receive the blessing of Abraham  through Jesus Christ.  These blessings continue only if we remain in our own ongoing personal relationship with through Jesus Christ.
  10. Hebrews 13:20-211 Hebrews 13:20-21 Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is wellpleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.  God continues to work in our lives through Jesus Christ.  God continues to work in our life only continue only if we remain in our own ongoing personal relationship with through Jesus Christ.
  11. 1Peter 4:11 If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.  God gets glory from preaching only if it is as of the ability which God giveth  and if that ability is used through Jesus Christ.

Verses using In Jesus

  1. When the word of God  uses the word in  and attaches it to a role / name of God, the word actually means: 'in relationship to' that role / name of God.  A true relationship is a two-way interaction between two beings with rights and responsibilities on each being.  Yes, Jesus  said I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee  (Hebrews 13:5).  However, if we are not fulfilling our responsibilities in this relationship, then we have left the relationship.  And, when we do that, we lose the benefits of that relationship.  With that in mind, our responsibility in this relationship is to follow the example of Jesus  for how to live in the flesh using the power of the Holy Ghost.  (Please see the Doctrinal Study called What Did Jesus Do?.
  2. Romans 3:26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.
This verse is part of a sentence which is actually in Romans 3:21-26 (But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus).  The entire sentence must be considered together at a minimum because a sentence expresses a single thought.  The note for this sentence, in the Book Study, is extensive and explains the entire sentence and the contextual considerations.  In particular, this sentence also deals with the faith of Jesus Christ  and the redemption that is in Christ Jesus  and all of these phrases are part of the doctrine of the righteousness of God without the law.  That is the righteousness of God  which is given to saved people during the 'Church Age'.  Now, our verse is telling us that God's righteousness...is manifested  ('revealed every possible way') so that God might be just  ('the one who wipes away the legal records of our sins which are recorded in heaven') and the justifier  (and 'the person Who provides what is necessary to justify His changing the legal record in Heaven').  And our verse continues with of him which believeth in Jesus  (The word believeth  means: 'a lifestyle belief which changes our life').  Here we see the condition which is required for us to receive the promise that God will be our justifier  and the promise that God will 'wipe away the legal records of our sins which are recorded in heaven'.  And that requirement is that we must fulfill what is meant by believeth in Jesus.  The Son od God's  role as Jesus  'shows us how to live in the flesh'.  (Please see the Doctrinal Study called What Did Jesus Do?)  Therefore, we can receive these promises only if we follow the example of Jesus  for how to live in the flesh.  That will cause God's righteousness  to become part of our character and part of the life that we manifest  to others.  This changed life then makes God the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.  And, after our change life makes God our justifier,  then God is just  to 'wipe away the legal records of our sins which are recorded in heaven'.
Thus, our sentence and verse is telling us that we must follow the example of Jesus  for how to live in the flesh if we want to receive these promises.  And, the saved people who do not do this requirement will be judged for the sins that they do after becoming a child of God.  That judgment will be at the judgment seat of Christ  (Romans 14:10; 2Corinthians 5:10).
  3. Ephesians 4:21 If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus:
This verse is part of a sentence which is actually in Ephesians 4:20-24 (But ye have not so learned Christ; If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus: That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness).  The entire sentence must be considered together at a minimum because a sentence expresses a single thought.  The note for this sentence, in the Book Study, is extensive and explains the entire sentence and the contextual considerations.  In particular, our verse starts with the word if.  That makes it conditional with the him,  of our verse, referring to the role of Christ,  wh9ich is earlier in this sentence and in the prior verse.  Now, our sentence is telling us that Christ  has not taught us to walk...as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.  Therefore, since Christ  has not taught us to act this way, if we still act this way then we have heard of Christ, and have been taught by Christ.  That is, any truly saved person who still acts this way is a carnal spiritual babe.  And, our verse continues to tell us as the truth is in Jesus.  This means that: 'Christ teaches saved people to follow the example of Jesus in order to walk in the truth and to mature spiritually'.
Now, our sentence continues with: That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man...And that ye put on the new man  with the skipped phrases telling us how to do this.  But, the point of what is quoted is that there must be a change in our man,  which means: 'how we act in the flesh'.  And, this change in our flesh is that we put off...the corruption which is according to the deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind  and that we put on...that which after God and is created in righteousness and true holiness.
The rest of this chapter tells us more specific doctrine to do which will help us to do what this sentence commands us to do.  However, here we see another place which tells us to follow the example of Jesus  for how to act in the flesh.  We are also told that our doing so will result in God's righteousness and true holiness  being manifest  in our life.  Those two points are the same as we saw in our prior reference.  What is new here is that this changed life is the result of the spiritual maturing which is taught by Christ.  And, if we are truly saved, then our failure to have this changed life proves that we are a carnal spiritual babe.
  4. 1Thessalonians 4:14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.
Our sentence starts with the word For,  which means it is giving us the reason why what came before this verse / sentence is true.  And, this sentence is prophecy about the 'Rapture'.  I believe that it is promising that the saved people who are 'Rapture'd, and them also which sleep in Jesus  will get their new glorified bodies at this time.  The next two sentences (three verses) indicate this but do not directly say it.  Therefore, this is not something to argue about.  However, we see Paul use the Phrases of: sleep in Jesus  and dead in Christ  to identify the same group of people and this group is not all saved.  Our chapter starts with: Furthermore then we beseech you, brethren, and exhort you by the Lord Jesus, that as ye have received of us how ye ought to walk and to please God, so ye would abound more and more.  And, all of the chapter before our verse is speaking about our walk  and how it must be according to the commandments we gave you by the Lord Jesus.  These are commandments  for how we are to live in our flesh and that we will be judged for obeying.  Therefore, the phrase of: them also which sleep in Jesus  is identifying dead saved people who obeyed the commandments we gave you by the Lord Jesus.  In addition, the phrase of: dead in Christ  is also identifying dead saved people who spiritually matured (in Christ)  by obeying the commandments we gave you by the Lord Jesus.  The saved people who did not obey are not included in this promise.  And, as explained elsewhere on this web site, they are also excluded from the marriage supper of the lamb  (Revelation 19:9) and are excluded from returning with Christ  to rule and reign on this Earth (Revelation 17:14).
What we see here, which matches the prior verses, is that there are promises given to people who follow the example of Jesus  for how to live in the flesh.  And, those promises are denied to saved people who refuse to follow the example of Jesus  for how to live in the flesh.

Verses using In Lord

The words in,  when associated with a name / role of God within the Bible, means: 'in relationship to'.  A relationship is between two beings with each having rights and responsibilities within the relationship.  And, each person can break the relationship by refusing to fulfill their responsibilities within the relationship.  Therefore, even though Jesus  will never leave us nor forsake us, we can destroy the relationship by refusing to fulfill our own responsibilities within the relationship.  And, with that in mind, we can see that when the Bible uses the phrase of: In Lord,  that Bible reference is telling us: 'what the Lord  will legally provide when we obey His commands'.  For example, the phrase: in the name of the Lord  tells us what we will legally receive, such as having the legal record of our sins blotted out, when we trust in the power and authority (nameof the Lord.  In addition, someone who cometh in the name of the Lord  has all of the power and authority, of the Lord,  backing their message.

  1. Matthew 23:39For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.  speaks about the power and authority of the Lord.

  10. Romans 16:2  That ye receive her in the Lord, as becometh saints, and that ye assist her in whatsoever business she hath need of you: for she hath been a succourer of many, and of myself also.  Our Second Equivalent Section starts with: That ye receive her in the Lord.  This is actually a command from Paul as the apostle to the Gentiles  ('their highest human authority under God').  And, they are to do this as becometh saints  ('acting like fully spiritually mature believers and servants of God').  Further, they were given explicate instructions to: assist her in whatsoever business she hath need of you.

  14. Romans 16:13  Salute Rufus chosen in the Lord, and his mother and mine.  Here Paul is saying that Rufus  answered the call from the Lord  and dedicated himself to the service of the Lord  to the extent that he ended up being chosen.  This shows us that God rewards people who truly dedicate their lives to the service to the Lord.
  15. Romans 16:22  I Tertius, who wrote this epistle, salute you in the Lord.  The scribe sent a personal salutation because he was probably a saved person and not just someone found who worked in the marketplace.  His salutation is in the Lord  because he does not know any of them personally but is united by a common service to the Lord.

  73. Romans 10:13For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved..  This sentence uses the word Lord  for our Lord Jesus Christ.  Every place what the Bible says: shall be saved,  it uses the title / role of Lord.  There is no place where the Bible tells us to 'ask Jesus to be your savior'.  This sentence tells us: 'whosoever trusts in the power and authority (call upon the name)) of the Lord' shall be saved.  Since the role of Lord  deals with laws, government and judgment, people must accept this role to change their legal record, in Heaven, for their sin, which is a violation of God's law.  They must also agree to His right to make laws telling us how to act and what attitudes to have.  They must also agree with His right to punish the disobedient.  And, these are just some of the basic differences between what is truly meant by call upon the name of the Lord  and what some people believe is meant by: 'ask Jesus to be your savior'.
  74. Romans 11:34For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counseller?  Basically, this question is part of the conclusion of this chapter which tells us that God does what He wants and no one has the power to stop God and no one has the wisdom to question God.  Therefore, we are to accept what God says without question.
  75. 1Corinthians 2:16 For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.
  76. 1Corinthians 5:5 To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.  Please see the note for 1Thessalonians 5:2 about the different types of days,  in the Bible, which belong to God.

  78. 1Corinthians 7:25 Now concerning virgins I have no commandment of the Lord: yet I give my judgment, as one that hath obtained mercy of the Lord to be faithful.
  79. 1Corinthians 7:34 There is difference also between a wife and a virgin. The unmarried woman careth for the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and in spirit: but she that is married careth for the things of the world, how she may please her husband.

  93. 2Corinthians 5:11 Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God; and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences.  The Lord  is Who will judge the saved ang give terror  to all saved people who refused to bring Him a spiritual profit.
  94. 2Corinthians 8:21 Providing for honest things, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men.  The Lord  is Who will judge us for our attitudes and actions.
  95. 2Corinthians 12:1 It is not expedient for me doubtless to glory. I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord.  The Lord  is the role used by God to determing what to reveal and when and how.
  96. 2Corinthians 13:14 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen.  The Lord Jesus Christ  blesses all who obey the commandments within any epistle.

Verses using In Lord Jesus

The words in,  when associated with a name / role of God within the Bible, means: 'in relationship to'.  A relationship is between two beings with each having rights and responsibilities within the relationship.  And, each person can break the relationship by refusing to fulfill their responsibilities within the relationship.  Therefore, even though Jesus  will never leave us nor forsake us, we can destroy the relationship by refusing to fulfill our own responsibilities within the relationship.  In addition, the Bible uses the role of Lo0rd  for all legal matters and it uses the name of Jesus  for our example of how to live in the flesh.  Therefore, with those things in mind, we can see that when the Bible uses the phrase of: In Lord Jesus,  that Bible reference is telling us that: 'we will be judged for how well we follow the example of Jesus'.

  1. Acts 8:16(For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)
  2. Acts 9:29And he spake boldly in the name of the Lord Jesus, and disputed against the Grecians: but they went about to slay him.

Verses using By Lord Jesus Christ

The word by  tells us how we get from one situation to another situation.  The following verses tell us that: as we obey for how to live in the flesh, and continue to learn spiritual maturity from the lessons given by Christ,  and trust our Lord  to take care of our spiritual legal problems; He will move us from one situation to another situation.

  1. Romans 5:21:  This verse tells us that as we let Jesus Christ our Lord  change our lives to display God's righteousness,  we end up receiving God's grace.  And, God's grace  took us from being bound by sin  and heading to the second death,  and reigned  in our live to give us the end result of eternal life.  The grace  that we receive is by Jesus Christ our Lord.  He, and our ongoing personal relationship with Him, is the One who took us from our original situation to the situation of our changed life.
  2. We are beseeched by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ  to end divisions in the church.  1Corinthians 1:10
  3. We are by him (Lord Jesus Christ).  Everything that we have is from Him and everything that we will have is from Him, and he expects us to represent His desires first, foremost and always   1Corinthians 8:6

Verses using Through Lord Jesus Christ

The word through  means that we must enter a barrier and travel inside it until we come out on the other side.  Think of a tunnel that lets us travel through  a mountain.  The things which are through our Lord Jesus Christ  are not given to people unless they enter their ongoing personal relationship with Him and stay doing their part in that relationship until they receive the promised results.  That means that they must continue to follow the example of Jesus  for how to live in the flesh, and continue to learn spiritual maturity from the lessons given by Christ  and they must keep in mind that they will be judged by their Lord  Who will give eternal rewards and / or punishments based upon how well they obeyed, or disobeyed, their personal commandments from Jesus  and from Christ.

  1. Acts 15:11:  Salvation is through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ.  .  .  .  .
  2. Romans 5:1We have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.  We must enter into the proper relationship with all three roles, and continue in that proper relationship, if we want to continue to have peace with God.  If we fail to do our part then God becomes angry with us and the possible punishment is anything up to, and including, death.
  3. Romans 5:11We also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.  This sentence is adding the fact that we have joy  in addition to what we are told that we have by the prior sentences, which includes the verse above.  In this case, the saved receive joy  when they realize that they have received the atonement  and when they realize the punishment that they would receive otherwise.
  4. Romans 6:11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Basically, we are commanded to stop responding to the prompting of sin and to respond to the personal commandments from Jesus Christ our Lord.  When we enter the ongoing personal relationship with Jesus Christ our Lord,  and continue in it by obeying His commandments based upon the knowledge that our future judgment (Lord)  will be based upon our personal commandments received from Jesus Christ,  He is able to use those personal commandments to cause us to stop responding to the temptations to sin (to be dead indeed unto sin).  We are to continue in this relationship (through)  until we come out on the other side, which will be in Heaven and facing the judgment seat of Christ  to receive rewards or punishments based upon our level of obedience.
  5. Romans 6:23For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.  When we sin, we earn (wagesdeath.  However, God offers us the free gift  of eternal life.  However, it is only given through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Therefore, we must accept, and do our part to maintain, the ongoing personal relationship with God which is through Jesus Christ our Lord.
  6. Romans 7:25I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.Jesus  shows the saved how to live in the flesh.  Christ  teaches us how to mature spiritually.  Lord  deals with government including laws and judgment.  The natural man (flesh)  is sinful.  By keeping future judgment in mind (with the mind I myself serve the law of God),  and keep in mind that I will be judged for how well I followed Jesus Christ  in an ongoing basis (through Jesus Christ)  Paul, and all saved, overcame the sinful rules of religion and were / are delivered...from the body of this death.
  7. 1Corinthians 15:55-57Victory over death is through our Lord Jesus Christ.  .  .  .  .
  8. 2Corinthians 8:9:  We are made rich  in God's grace  through our Lord Jesus Christ.  We must enter into this relationship and continue through  it, until we get to heaven, if we wish to be made rich  in God's grace.
  9. 2Peter 2:20:  We have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ..  .  .  .  .

Colossians 1:16-17 For by him were all things created...by him all things consist.  God the Father provides all of the power for creation and for maintaining creation but He does that using the way (by)  of God the Son.  That is: God the Father gave/gives the power to God the Son and the Son created all things  and He maintains creation.
    2. Colossians 1:20 And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in Heaven.  Our peace and reconciliation  are received only by the way of the Son.  This is not just at our initial salvation but also that which we receive in an ongoing basis after we sin as saved people.
    3. Colossians 3:17:   .  .  .  .

Verses using for Him

Only some of the verses which use this phrase have been added to this section so far.  The use of the word him  always refers to a being (role of God) that was directly named previously within the context.  Therefore, the exact meaning of the word him,  within the Bible, is stated for us.  Please follow the link supplied below for the detailed interpretation of the sentence and for contextual considerations.

  1. Verses using for Him is by God the Father
  2. Verses using for Him is by God the Son
    1. Colossians 1:16-17 ...all things were created by him, and for him.  This sentence tells us that all things  belong to God there Son because they were created by him, and for him.  The word for  means 'here's why.  Everything was created for His pleasure, which means He has the right to judge and destroy anything which does not fulfill His pleasure.  Our sentence specifies much more details and the explanation of all of those details are in the Bock Study on Colossians.

Verses using in Him

Only some of the verses which use this phrase have been added to this section so far.  The use of the word him  always refers to a being (role of God) that was directly named previously within the context.  Therefore, the exact meaning of the word him,  within the Bible, is stated for us.  Please follow the link supplied below for the detailed interpretation of the sentence and for contextual considerations.

  1. Verses using in Him is in God the Father
    1. 1John 1:5 ...and in him is no darkness at all.  We will not be in darkness  so long as we are in Him (God).
    2. 1John 2:6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.  Put Up or Shut Up: Walk like Jesus Christ walked or stop claiming to be a Christian.
    3. 1John 2:5 hereby know we that we are in him (God).  The evidence that we are saved (in Him) is that the love of God perfected  in that person while they are in this life.
    4. 1John 2:27 ...ye shall abide in him.  The Holy Ghost (anointing),  which we receive at salvation, teaches us to each personally (yeabide in him (in the Son, and in the Father).
    5. 1John 2:28 And now, little children, abide in him (in the Son, and in the Father); that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming.  Judgment day is coming.  A lot of people believe the lie that there will be no punishment given at the judgment seat of Christ,  even though 2Corinthians 5:10-11 tells us differently.  Most people don't believe that the sin unto death  is for today even though this epistle warns us about it.  This sentence warns us that the only way that we can truly have Biblical confidence about that judgment is if we abide in him.
    6. 1John 3:5 ...and in him (the Son of God) is no sin..  The Son of God is not going to lead us into sin because in him is no sin.  This is further explained by John's next sentence which is below.
    7. 1John 3:6 Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.  Our proof of whether we abideth in him,  or not, is whether we sin,  or not,
    8. 1John 3:24 And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us..  This very clearly says that the in  is two-way and not one-way.  We can not have Him in us  and not be in Him.  We can have the Holy Ghost in us while the Son of God is not in us  because the Holy Ghost never leaves the saved.  However, having the Son of God in us  is conditional.  Notice that this verse says that the Holy Spirit is the witness to us about if the Son of God is (also) in us or not.
    9. 1John 4:13 Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.  This says the same thing as was noted for 3:24 (above).  Our having His Spirit  does not guarantee that we dwell in him, and he in us.  Rather, His Spirit,  which never leaves us, tells us when we dwell in him, and he in us.
    10. 1John 4:16 ...God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.  We have houses but we do not always dwell  in them because there are times that we leave our houses.  Likewise, we do not always dwell  in love  because there are times that we leave love  and act like sinful humans.
    11. Colossians 2:6-7 As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving..  This sentence tells us to personally (yewalk  in the same kind of faith and action (as)  which resulted in our personal salvation.  The colon within this sentence makes ...so walk ye in him  equivalent to Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.  That is: Christ uses our ongoing personal relationship to makes us Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith.  Part of how He does this is teach us personally (as ye have been taught)  through the church and with preaching and teaching by godly men.  The evidence that we have really been taught is that we are abounding therein with thanksgiving.

  2. Verses using in Him is in God's Son
    1. Acts 10:43To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.  In this sentence, Peter references scripture to say that all the prophets give witness  that God will wipe out the record of our sins, and that we can go to Heaven, if we believeth in him.  Notice that this is not a religious act but it is putting our 'life-long belief' in the person of our Lord Jesus Christ.
    2. 1John 5:11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.  We can keep God's eternal life  growing in us only while we abide in Him.
    3. 1John 5:14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us.  The this  of this verse is referring to the prior verse where John said ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.  True Biblical believe  results in action.  Our confidence  (and how much we have) in getting our prayers answered is based our acting upon our belief on the name of the Son of God.
    4. 1John 5:20 And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.  Our knowing  that we are in Him  is based upon the understanding  that he hath given us.  If we reject the understanding  that comes from the Son of God in favor of a religious error, we will not know (that) we are in him that is true.
    5. 2Corinthians 1:19 For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us, even by me and Silvanus and Timotheus, was not yea and nay, but in him was yeaThe Son of God, Jesus Christ  does not keep changing His mind but the things that He says are always reliable.
    6. 2Corinthians 1:20 For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us..  We only get the promises of God  when we are in Him.  However, when we are in Him,  the promises are guaranteed.

  3. Verses using in him to mean in Christ
    1. 2Corinthians 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.  The prior verse specifically says that the him  of this verse is Christ.  Receiving the righteousness of God  takes time and requires Christ  to change us to be like God (John 1:12).  This happens over time after our initial profession.
    2. 2Corinthians 13:4 For we also are weak in him, but we shall live with him by the power of God toward you.  The second prior verse specifically says that the him  of this verse is Christ.  We have the power of God  in our lives only when we are in Christ.
    3. Colossians 1:19 For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell;.  The full context and the rest of this sentence is dealt with in the Book Study on Colossians.  However, the phrase that concerns us in this Study tells us that we can not be fulfilled  outside of our ongoing personal relationship with the Son of God.  Please also see the verse below.
    4. Colossians 2:9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.  The prior sentence of this chapter specifically says that the him  of this verse is Christ.  We have access to everything that is available from God when we are in Christ,  Which is literally what the next sentence says when it says: And ye are complete in him...  Please see the Book Study for more details on the context.  Please also see the verse above.
    5. Colossians 2:10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:.  Since our sentence tells us that we are complete in him,  it should be obvious that we can not be made complete  unless we are in him.  In addition, it should be obvious that we can not be remain complete  unless we remain in him.  Since our verse/sentence starts with the word For,  it is giving a reason why what was said in the prior verse/sentence is true.  Please see the Book Study on Colossians for the full context as this entire chapter is talking about the subject of this sentence.

  4. Verses using in him is in a man
    1. 1John 2:4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.  Neither Jesus Christ  nor God's truth  is in a disobedient liar.
    2. 1John 2:24 Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father..  The way to continue in the Son, and in the Father  is to be sure to keep God's truth abiding  in us.

Verses using Him in

Only the verses within 1John have been added to this section so far.  With few exceptions, only verses which use him  for God are included here.  The exceptions are where the verse is talking about us being in God and the him  is used for us.

We must be in Him in order to have Him in  us.

  1. 1John 3:9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God..  This sentence uses seed  for the life from God that we receive at our initial salvation and that remains in  saved people.
  2. 1John 3:15 Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him..  If eternal life  is not abiding in  a person then they are not saved.
  3. 1John 3:17 But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?.  Since God is love,  and a saved person has a problem with their relationship with God if God (meaning the Father, not the Holy Spirit) is not abiding  in them, then this sentence is telling us that when we refuse to have compassion  on our brother, we are showing that we have a problem with our relationship with God the Father.
  4. 1John 3:24 And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him.
  5. 1John 4:4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world..  Most people apply this sentence to all saved.  However, not all saved have overcome  the spirit of antichrist.  This is because, as we have seen in these summary notes and in the more detailed notes of the Book Study on 1John, Having God the Father in us  is actually talking about having our relationship right and not talking about if we are saved or lost.  We must have our relationship with God the Father right in order to overcome  the spirit of antichrist.
  6. 1John 4:12 No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.1John 2:5 told us that having his love is perfected in us  gave us assurance of salvation.  This sentence adds to that by telling us that If we love one another  we will be sanctified (have his love is perfected in us).
  7. 1John 4:13 Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.  This says the same thing as was noted for 3:24 (above).  Our having His Spirit  does not guarantee that we dwell in him, and he in us.  Rather, His Spirit,  which never leaves us, tells us when we dwell in him, and he in us.
  8. 1John 4:15 Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God..  The key to understanding this sentence is realizing that when the Bible uses the word confess,  it is talking about something that you live, not just something that you say one time.  It takes God in us  and un in God  in order to live a life which displays that Jesus is the Son of God.
  9. 1John 4:16 ...God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him..  Please see the note for this verse in the Book Study on 1John.
  10. 1John 5:10 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.  This sentence is summing up what John is saying in this epistle.  If someone is saved (believeth on the Son of God) then they have the witness in himself  (indwelling Holy Spirit).  That witness  testifies of the record that God gave of his Son,  which is that He causes the saved to 'Stop their sinning'.  People who claim to be saved but never 'Stop their sinning' and never have an internal witness  that they need to 'Stop their sinning' hath made him (God) a liar.

  26. John 10:21 These are not the words of him that hath a devil.  These people refused to believe that the words which Jesus  said (the words belonged to Him) would match what a devil would say.
  27. John 10:36 Say ye of him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God?Jesus  questioned the Jews calming that continuous blaspheme  belonged to Him because he disagreed with the doctrinal error taught by the religious leaders.
  28. John 12:16 tells us that the disciples remembered the things (that were) were written of him  (the writings  'belonged to" Him)  after He rose from the dead.
  29. John 12:41 These things said Esaias, when he saw his glory, and spake of him..  The prophecy  was about Jesus.  Therefore, it 'belonged to" Him.
  30. John 19:36 For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken..  No bone  that 'belonged to Him was broken.
  31. Acts 1:6:  The phrase: of him,  in our sentence / verse,   .  .  .  .
  32. Acts 7:40:  The phrase: of him,  in our sentence / verse,   .  .  .  .
  33. Acts 9:2:  The phrase: of him,  in our sentence / verse,   .  .  .  .
  34. Acts 9:26:  The phrase: of him,  in our sentence / verse,   .  .  .  .
  35. Acts 13:29:  The phrase: of him,  in our sentence / verse,   .  .  .  .
  36. Acts 22:9:  The phrase: of him,  in our sentence / verse,   .  .  .  .
  37. Acts 23:20:  The phrase: of him,  in our sentence / verse,   .  .  .  .
  38. Romans 1:20 invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seenJesus  used the wind as an illustration of spiritual things in John 3.  You can not see the wind but you can see the effects of the wind.  Likewise, we can not sense spiritual things with our physical senses but we can sense their effects.  Thus, the invisible (spiritual) things of him (God) from the creation of the world are clearly seen  in their effects on this physical world.
  39. Romans 3:26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.  The him,  of this verse, is speaking about anyone who believeth in Jesus.
  40. Romans 5:14 Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come.  The him,  of this verse, is Jesus.  Adam had the figure  of a literal physical man and so did Jesus.  Since we sinned as literal physical men, Jesus  had to pay for our sins as literal physical man.
  41. Romans 8:11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.  The phrase: of him,  in our sentence / verse, is used for: 'of God the Father'.  The phrase: quicken your mortal bodies  means: 'make you spiritually alive in your mortal body'.  That is, even though we are still in sinful flesh, God the Father is able to use his Spirit that dwelleth in you  to do spiritual things such as bring spiritual life (salvation, sanctification)  to other people.  The power to quicken your mortal bodies  ('make you spiritually alive within your physical body') 'belongs to' (of ) God the Father.
  42. Romans 8:20-21 For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope, Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.  The phrase: of him,  in our sentence / verse, is used for what 'belongs to' God the Father.  The reason  that all of creation was cursed, when Adam sinned, 'belongs to' God the Father.  And, while we might not understand why God cursed all of creation, we do not have the power nor wisdom to challenge God the Father.  Therefore, we must accept by faith what God did and wait until He decides to explain His reason  before we try to understand why God did what he did.
  43. Romans 9:10-12: And not only this; but when Rebecca also had conceived by one, even by our father Isaac; (For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth;) It was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger.  The phrase: of him,  in our sentence / verse, is used for God the Father.  Our sentence tells us that God the Father created the plan called election.  And our sentence tells us that this plan had nothing to do with if the people did any good or evil  and it was to show us that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth.  Therefore, the elect  are the people who answer when God calleth  and come to God the way that God calls them to come.
  44. Romans 9:16: So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.  The phrase: of him,  in our sentence / verse, is speaking about the person who wants to be saved.  Many people believe that they can wait until their death bed to be saved.  They believe that God has to save them when they are willing  to be saved.  But our sentence says otherwise.  Others believe that God has to weigh their 'good works' against their 'bad works', using what they believe to be 'good' and 'bad'.  Our sentence, with the prior sentences of the chapter, make it clear that these doctrines are lies which come from devils.
  45. Romans 11:36: For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever..  The word of  means: 'belongs to'.  All things 'belong to' Jesus Christ  because He is the Creator  Romans 1:25; 1Peter 4:19).  The word through  means: 'enter one side of a barrier and continue traveling inside until you come out the other side'.  Matthew 28:18 says: And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.  Since He has All power,  we must enter into our ongoing personal relationship with Him and do our part to maintain that relationship until we come out on the other side and receive the blessing that we seek.  In addition, the word to  means: 'moving towards'.  This means that all things are 'moving towards' the Lord  and He will end up controlling all things.  When we put this all together, we see that we must do our part to maintain our ongoing personal relationship with the Lord  if we want to have and keep anything.
  46. 1Corinthians 1:30:  The phrase: of him,  in our sentence / verse,   .  .  .  .
  47. 1Corinthians 8:3:  The phrase: of him,  in our sentence / verse,   .  .  .  .
  48. 1Corinthians 8:10:  The phrase: of him,  in our sentence / verse,   .  .  .  .
  49. 2Corinthians 5:9: Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him.  The phrase: of him,  in our sentence / verse, is referencing the Lord  as specified in the prior sentence.  Since the Lord  is Who will judge our life, He is Who we must please and no other being.
  50. Galatians 5:8:  The phrase: of him,  in our sentence / verse,   .  .  .  .
  51. Ephesians 1:11:  The phrase: of him,  in our sentence / verse,   .  .  .  .
  52. Ephesians 1:17:  The phrase: of him,  in our sentence / verse,   .  .  .  .
  53. Ephesians 1:23:  The phrase: of him,  in our sentence / verse,   .  .  .  .
  54. Ephesians 3:12:  The phrase: of him,  in our sentence / verse,   .  .  .  .
  55. Philippians 2:22:  The phrase: of him,  in our sentence / verse,   .  .  .  .

Verses using with Him is with Christ

  1. Colossians 2:12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.  This is the third Equivalent Section of a sentence which started in Colossians 2:10 and is an integral part of the message that Paul spent the entire chapter delivering.  There are certain things that God does for us and there are certain things which require our willing and active participation.  In this sentence Paul is telling us what God did as a result of our willingly being baptized with him (Christ).  Paul then goes on and tells us other spiritual things that God did and how these things are supposed to result in changes within our behaviour.  When we do something with him (Christ),  we are to go where Christ goes and do what Christ does, just like when we are with anyone else.
  2. Colossians 2:13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;.  This is the First Step of a three Step process which is in the sentence that goes through 2:15 and is added (by the sentence starting with an And)  to the sentence of the verse above.  Thus, out sentence is telling us the 'other spiritual things' that God did because we were with him (Christ).  Please see the note for this sentence in the Book Study on Colossians for the details.  The simple explanation of this phrase is that we are made more spiritually alive / caused to grow spiritually (quickened)  only when we are together with him (Christ).
