John Mark: Example of Average Youth

  • His Ministry
    1. Started as a teen-aged follower of Jesus
    2. Went to the first mission church with his uncle Barnabas
    3. Ran away from problems on the mission field
    4. Caused a split between Paul and Barnabas which ended our hearing about Barnabas
    5. Was profitable  to Paul later in his life
    6. Wrote one of the four Gospel accounts
  • His Messiah
    1. The example servant: This is the theme of the entire Gospel.
    2. The suffering servant:
    3. The instructing servant: In Mark 9:35 and Mark 10:31 we read: If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all.  He instructs us to be servants if we want to be great in Heaven.
  • His Message
    1. Mark 1:15 (Jesus said), The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.  This is true Biblical repentance  which includes turning towards God with a heart that is willing to submit and obey.
    2. Mark 1:17 And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men.  God will change the character of those people who truly are saved.
    3. However, He promises rewards in proportion to what we do as His servants working in His kingdom. (Mark 10:21).
    4. He tells us that to be greatest in Heaven we must be servant of all,  just like He was (Mark 10:42-45).
    5. Mark 16:15-20: He ends his message with the 'Great Commission' and the fact that the apostles obeyed it. They are our example and we have salvation today because they were willing to serve God this way.
    6. Who will be saved or helped spiritually by you following the example of John Mark?
