Shut up, Get up, Do up

Joshua 7:10-12: And the LORD said unto Joshua, Get thee up; wherefore liest thou thus upon thy face? Israel hath sinned, and they have also transgressed my covenant which I commanded them: for they have even taken of the accursed thing, and have also stolen, and dissembled also, and they have put it even among their own stuff. Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they were accursed: neither will I be with you any more, except ye destroy the accursed from among you.

1Peter 3:7: Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.

1Samuel 8:18: And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the LORD will not hear you in that day.

Job 35:13: Surely God will not hear vanity, neither will the Almighty regard it.

Psalms 66:18: If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me:

Isaiah 1:15: And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide mine eyes from you: yea, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear: your hands are full of blood.

Isaiah 30:9: That this is a rebellious people, lying children, children that will not hear the law of the LORD:

Isaiah 59:2: But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.

Jeremiah 7:16: Therefore pray not thou for this people, neither lift up cry nor prayer for them, neither make intercession to me: for I will not hear thee.

Jeremiah 11:14: Therefore pray not thou for this people, neither lift up a cry or prayer for them: for I will not hear them in the time that they cry unto me for their trouble.

Jeremiah 13:17: But if ye will not hear it, my soul shall weep in secret places for your pride; and mine eye shall weep sore, and run down with tears, because the LORD'S flock is carried away captive.

Jeremiah 14:12: When they fast, I will not hear their cry; and when they offer burnt offering and an oblation, I will not accept them: but I will consume them by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence.

Jeremiah 22:5: But if ye will not hear these words, I swear by myself, saith the LORD, that this house shall become a desolation.

Jeremiah 22:21: I spake unto thee in thy prosperity; but thou saidst, I will not hear. This hath been thy manner from thy youth, that thou obeyedst not my voice.

Amos 5:23: Take thou away from me the noise of thy songs; for I will not hear the melody of thy viols.

Micah 3:4: Then shall they cry unto the LORD, but he will not hear them: he will even hide his face from them at that time, as they have behaved themselves ill in their doings.

Malachi 2:2: If ye will not hear, and if ye will not lay it to heart, to give glory unto my name, saith the LORD of hosts, I will even send a curse upon you, and I will curse your blessings: yea, I have cursed them already, because ye do not lay it to heart.

Acts 3:23: And it shall come to pass, that every soul, which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people.

This is not an accusation against anyone but a warning.  In our first reference, in the book of Joshua, they had just started a great work for God.  They were blessed and had God given victory.  Everyone was excited about the great things that God would do and then disaster hit.

  1. God will not hear our prayer when:
    1. We steal the first fruit offering or the tithe
    2. We refuse to honor the people of God, especially our mate
    3. We pray in vanity
    4. We hold lifestyle sins (iniquity) in our heart
    5. We refuse to hear, and obey, the word of God
    6. We sin and refuse to obey God
    7. We are praying for blessings on someone else who refuses to hear and obey the word of God
    8. We cause God's people to sin and disobey God
    9. We are reaping the results of prior sin
    10. We are violent and shed the blood of others
    11. We are not thankful when God blesses but claim that we provided what truly came from God
    12. We refuse to be witnesses for God and glorify God
    13. We refuse rebuke and correction sent from God
  2. Their sin came from a failure to pray
    1. Joshua 7:1-5: There was sin but they didn't know about it because they didn't pray before doing the next step in the work of God.
    2. They decided to send only part of God's people instead of involving all.
    3. They sinned by deciding in the wisdom of the flesh instead of seeking guidance from God first.
  3. Your sin is not hidden.
    1. The devil wants God's people to forget that God sees and records everything.
    2. Your flesh wants you to look at the pleasures of this world and to avoid suffering that is part of the service of God.
    3. God wants you to give the first fruits to Him in recognition that He is the one who enables you to do everything that you do.
  4. Your sin affects others.
    1. Joshua 7:5 And the men of Ai smote of them about thirty and six men: for they chased them from before the gate even unto Shebarim, and smote them in the going down: wherefore the hearts of the people melted, and became as water.
    2. Romans 15:30 Now I beseech you, brethren, for the Lord Jesus Christ's sake, and for the love of the Spirit, that ye strive together with me in your prayers to God for me
    3. James 5:16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
  5. Your sin affects your future and the future of your family.
    1. We read I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me  in Exodus 20:5, Exodus 34:7, Numbers 14:18 and Deuteronomy 5:9.
    2. Joshua 14:7, Psalms 103:17, Proverbs 13:22, Proverbs 17:6 and Ezekiel 37:25 all promised blessings to future generations when God's people obeyed.
    3. Joshua 7:24-25 tells us that not only Achan, but all of his family died because of his sin.  He had no inheritance, nor future generations.  Even if the care of your church is not enough to keep you from sin, your own future and the future of your family should be remembered.
    4. Pray for one another because the future of all is dependent upon it.  Remember that James 5:16 told us: The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
  6. When God will not hear our prayer and we want Him to listen:
    1. Stop robbing God
    2. Give honor to whom honor is due, especially our mate
    3. Be sincere in your prayers
    4. Stop your sins, especially lifestyle sins
    5. Hear and obey the word of God
    6. Stop praying for blessings on people who refuse to hear and obey the word of God
    7. Stop supporting doctrinal error which causes God's people to sin and disobey God
    8. Accept the reaping of your prior sin with the knowledge that you will also reap good if you continue to obey God's word
    9. Stop doing violence
    10. Be thankful and acknowledge when God blesses
    11. Be a witness, a soul winner and someone who supports the work of God
    12. Do personal worship and publicly glorify God
    13. Accept all rebuke and correction sent from God
