Psalms 31:5 Into thine hand I commit my spirit: thou hast redeemed me, of LORD God of truth.

This verse is found under Man's Spirit for the point titled 'We are to commit (our) spirit  to God because thou hast redeemed me  When we do that, God can stir  our spirit to do His work.  God gives us His Holy Spirit in the Church Age so that our spirit can do His work in response to His Spirit stirring  our spirit.'  The application note also references point 3(salvation) under God's Spirit and the Book Study on Romans which explains how there are saved people (in the Church Age) who are not Biblical Christians  because they refused to commit their spirit  after being redeemed.  Within our verse we see a colon which makes not thine hand I commit my spirit  equivalent to thou hast redeemed me, of LORD God of truth.  That is: the reason we are to commit (our) spirit  is because God hast redeemed  us and if we will not commit (our) spirit  then God will not redeem  us.  We also see that this agreement of action is based upon the acknowledged character of God when the psalmist calls God O LORD God of truth.  The all capitalized use of LORD  relates to a particular name of God the Father in Hebrew.  Please also see the Word Study on Truth for this verse.

Psalms 34:18 The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit .

This verse is found under Man's Spirit for the point titled 'We can have a contrite spirit.  That point also says that his is similar to a broken spirit,  which is called the sacrifices of God,  and means that we have a broken and a contrite heart.'  Here we see that correcting our attitude (them that are of a broken heart)  will get the LORD is nigh unto  us.  Since this verse has a semi-colon in it, we also see that this changed attitude is the first step which we must take before we can be of a contrite spirit.  We also see that we want to do this so that the LORD  will save  us.  Please remember that Peter cried Lord, save me  when he was worried about drowning and not worried about going to Hell (Matthew 14:30).  Thus, the saveth such as be of a contrite spirit,  in our verse of Psalms, is actually talking about the righteous  (as literally said in the next verse of this Psalm).  Within the context of this Psalm we see that David is talking about the LORD  keeping a saved person from going into sin and error that would bring disastrous results into their life.  Of course, these comments also match what this Psalm literally says in the next verse.

Psalms 51:10 Create in me a clean heart, of God; and renew a right spirit within me.

This verse is found under God's Spirit for the point titled 'We can have a right spirit  but it requires that we first have a clean heart.'  This Psalm was written by David in acknowledgement of his sin with Bathsheba.  Please notice that earlier in this Psalm David says things like Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.  God always cleans out filth before He puts something good  in anyone.  As this Psalm acknowledges, we can not do these things for ourselves but need God to do them for us.  Please also see the other notes for verses of this Psalm that also are in this Word Study on Spirit because all are related by being part of the same Psalm.

Psalms 51:11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.

This verse is found under God's Spirit for the point titled 'Men could loose the Spirit of the LORD  in the Old Testament.  However, at no time could men go someplace that God's Spirit couldn't reach them.  That is: God can always reach us but there are times when He chooses to not do so and lets us suffer the consequences of our sins.'  In this Psalm we see David acknowledging the possible consequence of his personal sin and asking God not only for forgiveness but also for mercy  in that he wants to avoid the consequence of his sin.  Please notice that the Psalm starts out with Have mercy upon me, of God, according to thy lovingkindness.  The reason that David gives as a basis for receiving mercy  is God's own character trait of lovingkindness.  Please also see the other notes for verses of this Psalm that also are in this Word Study on Spirit because all are related by being part of the same Psalm.

Psalms 51:12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit .

This verse is found under Man's Spirit for the point titled 'Our spirit can be revived and that revival comes from God's free spirit.'  Please note that David makes this request to happen after God does several other things first.  God only does things in the right order and if we are not willing to do things God's way then we do not receive God's results.  Please also see the other notes for verses of this Psalm that also are in this Word Study on Spirit because all are related by being part of the same Psalm.

Psalms 51:17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, of God, thou wilt not despise.

This verse is found under Man's Spirit for the point titled 'We can have a contrite spirit.  That point also says that his is similar to a broken spirit,  which is called the sacrifices of God,  and means that we have a broken and a contrite heart.'  In this Psalm that David wrote after his sin with Bathsheba, David recognized what God required in order for God to not despise  David's request.  Here we see that we can affect our spirit,  with God's help, and that we need to do that if we want God's mercy.  Remember that this Psalm starts with Have mercy upon me, of God, according to thy lovingkindness.  Please also see the other notes for verses of this Psalm that also are in this Word Study on Spirit because all are related by being part of the same Psalm.

Psalms 76:12 He shall cut off the spirit of princes: he is terrible to the kings of the earth.

This verse is found under Man's Spirit for the point titled 'Men can loose their spirit  or have their spirit be overwhelmed,  which means they give up hope'.  In this Psalm we are told how that God can overwhelm the desire to go to war.  Princes  are men who do not rule but are in a realistic position to hope that they will rule some day.  They consider going to war in order to make that day happen sooner.  However, our Psalm tells us that the God of Jacob  stops them.

Psalms 77:3 I remembered God, and was troubled: I complained, and my spirit was overwhelmed.  Selah.

This verse is found under Man's Spirit for the point titled 'Men can loose their spirit  or have their spirit be overwhelmed,  which means they give up hope'.  In this Psalm, the psalmist said I complained, and my spirit was overwhelmed  because of circumstances of life.  However, his response to these problems was I remembered God.  With that remembrance, he was troubled  because he had expected God to keep him out of the type of circumstances that he was in.  But then he goes on to say I have considered the days of old, the years of ancient times.  I call to remembrance my song in the night: I commune with mine own heart: and my spirit made diligent search.  From there he goes on to tell us how to deal with times when we feel like God has abandoned us and the devil is having his way with our life.

Psalms 77:6 I call to remembrance my song in the night: I commune with mine own heart: and my spirit made diligent search.

This verse is found under Man's Spirit for the point titled 'When God cuts us off from His blessings due to sin, our spirit can (and should) make diligent search to see what we need to do to get right with God again.'  This verse is a follow-up on the verse above and tells us how the psalmist dealt with the circumstances described above.

Psalms 78:8 And might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation; a generation that set not their heart aright, and whose spirit was not stedfast with God.

This verse is found under Man's Spirit for the point titled 'Men can turnest thy spirit against God.'  In this Psalm the psalmist confesses that even though people belong to God and God provides them all that they need to win the battle, sometimes God's people refuse to act in faith and are defeated.  When God's people do this, it hurts the testimony of God and can bring the judgment of God upon His people.  This is because what should have caused the lost to trust God now causes them to turn to devils who claim to be gods.

Psalms 104:4 Who maketh his angels spirits; his ministers a flaming fire:

This verse is found under Other Spirits for the point titled 'Angels are spirits.  Since devils are fallen angels , they are also spirits.  In addition, there are other types of spirits  in Heaven which apparently are not angels but which we do not have a complete description of.  There are also other types of unclean spirits  besides devils.'  Thus, we see that angels  are only one type of spiritual being.  With this consideration, we see that the context of this Psalm is that the psalmist is declaring details which support his opening remark of Bless the LORD, of my soul. of LORD my God, thou art very great.  In our verse we see that God gives His servants (angels  and ministers)  abilities to do more than their natural abilities would allow them to do.  That is: God could have chose to make all of His servants human but He chose to create angels  and gave then the power of a spirit,  which is more than the power of a human.

Psalms 104:30 Thou sendest forth thy spirit, they are created: and thou renewest the face of the earth.

This verse is found under God's Spirit for the point titled 'The Spirit of God was involved in Creation.'  Within the context of this Psalm, which is describing the power of God, we see that all life comes from God's spirit.  Please notice that this spirit  is lower-case.  This is not the Holy Spirit but the spirit  that gives life to everything that is alive.  From this we see the truth that it takes a man, a woman and God to create a baby because without God providing the spirit,  there is no life.

This verse is found under Man's Spirit for the point titled 'Our spirit can be provoked.  Without God's help when that happens, we will do something unadvicedly.'  Within this Psalm, the psalmist is talking about the sin that Moses did which kept him out of the Promised Land.  As the psalmist says: they provoked him to anger with their inventions.  People invented reasons to challenge the leadership of Moses even though they could not do as good of a job as Moses did.  Here we see that the things that they did provoked  Moses in his inner-most being, which is our personal spirit.

Psalms 139:7 Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?

This verse is found under God's Spirit for the point titled 'Men could loose the Spirit of the LORD  in the Old Testament.  However, at no time could men go someplace that God's Spirit couldn't reach them.  That is: God can always reach us but there are times when He chooses to not do so and lets us suffer the consequences of our sins.'  In this Psalm we see David acknowledging all of the detailed ways that God knows each of us.  He mentions how foolish it is to think that we can be bloody  and God not know about it.  This Psalm ends with the well-known verse of: Search me, of God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

Psalms 142:3 When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, then thou knewest my path.  In the way wherein I walked have they privily laid a snare for me.

This verse is found under Man's Spirit for the point titled 'Men can loose their spirit  or have their spirit be overwhelmed,  which means they give up hope.'  Within the context of this Psalm we see that the psalmist felt that everyone was against him.  That feeling continued so long that it overwhelmed  his spirit.  At that point he turned to God and received strength and ability to continue in spite of all that was against him.  Within this verse, we see spirit  used for our inner-most being.

Psalms 143:4 Therefore is my spirit overwhelmed within me; my heart within me is desolate.

This verse is found under Man's Spirit for the point titled 'Men can loose their spirit  or have their spirit be overwhelmed,  which means they give up hope.'  Please see the note above which is for a verse within the prior Psalm.  In both of these Psalms we see David in the same condition but from different circumstances.  From this we learn that it really does not matter what circumstances get us into a desperate situation, the solution is the same.  We are to turn to God and trust Him in spite of all circumstances and without any consideration of who, or if, anyone is with us or against us.  That note applies to both Psalms.

Psalms 143:7 Hear me speedily, of LORD: my spirit faileth: hide not thy face from me, lest I be like unto them that go down into the pit.

This verse is found under Man's Spirit for the point titled 'Men can loose their spirit  or have their spirit be overwhelmed,  which means they give up hope.'  This verse is in the same Psalm as the one above and only adds to what was said within that verse and note.  Here we see David express that he was so far gone that he feared spirit death or at least permanent spiritual damage.  He knew that the only rescue was from the Lord, but when he looked he could not find the Lord.  That's why he says hide not thy face from me, lest I be like unto them that go down into the pit.  Here we see him begging God to reveal Himself and His lovingkindness.  David goes on to ask God to renew his spirit.

Psalms 143:10 Teach me to do thy will; for thou art my God: thy spirit is good; lead me into the land of uprightness.

This verse is found under God's Spirit for the point titled 'God's Spirit is good.'  That is: good  things come from God's Spirit such as God's teaching,  God leading  us, God making us upright  and putting us with other people who are upright.  After this verse we see the psalmist praying for things that God gives only to people who obey and follow Him and also become good.  Please notice that the spirit  in this verse is lower-case.  That means that it is not the Holy Spirit  but it is David's personal spirit  which has been made good  by the actions of God.
