There are many forms of life  in the world and in the Bible (plant, animal, human, spiritual, etc).  We need to be rightly dividing the Word of Truth  by looking at the context and making sure that the type of life  which is in the sentence is the same type of life  that we apply the sentence to.  Please see the context of each sentence and the note associated with each to verify the type of life,  which the word of God  is talking about in that particular instance. only man was given the type of life which lasts for eternity.

God created the never-changing laws of true science and of math when He created this physical reality.  God does not change:  (Malachi 3:6; Hebrews 13:8).  God also made never-changing laws when He wrote His word.  Those laws are more authoritative than the laws of creation, because Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away  (Matthew 24:35; Mark 13:31 and Luke 21:33).  Many people believe a doctrine of devils  (1Timothy 4:1) that they can ignore or over-ride these laws of God's word with their own opinion or their religious beliefs.  If such are truly saved, then they will be made ashamed  at the judgment seat of Christ  (Romans 14:10; 2Corinthians 5:10) and all of Heaven will know of their error for all eternity.

Part of God's never-changing laws of this physical reality are the laws of Math.  And, man uses the laws of Math to understand and explain our physical reality.  One of the things which we learn from Math is that there are multiple dimensions within our physical reality.  Non-living things of this physical reality, such as rocks, exist in three dimensions: height, width and depth.  Living things, such as plants and animals, exist in those three dimensions and in the dimension of time.  All living things move by themselves in time.  (For example, plants turn their flowers to follow the sun.)  Humans, because God made man a living soul  (Genesis 2:7; 1Corinthians 15:45) exist in the prior four dimensions and in the dimension of spirit.  This is why men can understand abstract things such as math and the laws of science, while nothing else of this physical dimension can understand the abstract.  No animal or plant has an eternal soul.  It is also why man will exist for eternity, in Heaven or the lake of fire,  while animals and plants will not continue to exist.  And, with an eternal soul, man needs to seek eternal life  if he wants to go th Heaven and avoid eternity in the lake of fire.

The word live  is: 'the active verb form of life' while the word life  is the noun form.  (Below is the dictionary definition.)  A critical verse to understand this Bible truth is Matthew 4:4, which says; But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.  This sentence quotes Deuteronomy 8:3.  Therefore, this is part of the law of God.  Please see the note for Galatians C2-S14, which says; For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God.  That note has doctrine on how God wants the saved the live.  In addition, Please see the note for Philippians 1:21, which says; For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.  As explained in that note, the saved are supposed to live a life which displays the influence and control by Christ.  The world defines Christian  with a non-Biblical definition and most saved people, including preachers, also use a non-Biblical definition.  There were probably 20,000 professing saved people in the Jerusalem Church who were saved but the word of God  denies that they were true Biblical Christians.  Please see the note for that reference as well as the note for 1Peter 4:16 about the true Biblical definition of Christian.  Please see the note for Romans C9S28 about live / walk by faith.  Please see the note for Romans C11S6 about The just shall live by his faith.  Please see the note for Colossians C3S4 about Christ lives through us.

The word of God  uses the phrase eternal life  26 times and used the phrase everlasting life  11 times.  These are promises that God gives to those people who fulfill His requirements.  Please see the Promises sections in the Significant New Testament Events and the Significant Events in the New Testament documents.  Notice that every promise includes a requirement for us to do something before God gives us the promise.  Those people who refuse to fulfill God's requirements do not receive the promise, in spite of the popular lies from doctrine of devils  (1Timothy 4:1).

The word eternal  is defined as: 'existing with no beginning and no end'.  The word everlasting  is defined as: 'existing with a beginning but no end'.  For some reason, many people confuse these two phrases.  Now, as seen below, the truly saved are offered eternal life.  But, since our physical life has a beginning and our spiritual life has a beginning, we can not receive eternal life  as our own.  However, just as a man says that his wife is his and the wife says that the husband is hers, so also can we say that our Lord Jesus Christ  is ours.  The Bible references which say that we can have eternal life  are speaking about a relationship that is pictured by marriage.

The truly saved are given everlasting life.  Please see the Message called Labor for Everlasting Life.  The phrase everlasting life  is defined as: 'life existing with a beginning but no end'.  The following references have the phrase everlasting life  in the word of God  in:

The truly saved are offered everlasting life.  The phrase everlasting life  is defined as: 'life existing with no beginning but and end'.  The everlasting life,  which is offered to the truly saved, is: 'An ongoing personal relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ  that is pictured by marriage'.  As already mentioned, just as a man says that his wife is his and the wife says that the husband is hers, so also can we say that our Lord Jesus Christ  is ours.  However, this requires our building our ongoing personal relationship after our initial salvation.  People who refuse to obey, in this physical life, can not expect much of a relationship in eternity.

The following references have the phrase eternal life  in the word of God  in:

Please see the note for each sentence listed above for more details on each the wording of each sentence.  In addition, please also see the note for Romans 2:7 which has additional verses which teach the same thing while not using these exact words.  Finally, please note that all references speak of an ongoing personal relationship with God and not a religious relationship.  The claim that religion gives us true spiritual salvation  and / or true spiritual sanctification  is proven to be a lying doctrine of devils  (1Timothy 4:1).

There is also another important doctrine which is written in 2Corinthians 2:15-16.  It says: For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish: To the one we are the savour of death unto death; and to the other the savour of life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things?  Many people get hung-up on the word savour ,  which is, basically, 'smell and taste'.  But, the real important word is unto,  which is 'approaching and reaching a goal with the emphasis on the approach'.  And, the question becomes: 'What does God mean by life approaching life and by death approaching death?'.

Death  is understood to be 'the end of life'.  However, men have a hard time defining when death  is true.  The legal definition of death  varies from one legal jurisdiction to another.  A person can be legally declared death  in one legal jurisdiction while being legally declared alive in another legal jurisdiction.  Historically, people have been declared dead, buried and, later, dug up to find their nails broken off while they tried to dig out of the casket.  That is why morticians replace all of the blood with another fluid before burying someone today.  {Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.  (John 6:53-54)}.

The phrase life unto life  is easier to understand, and accept, than the phrase death unto death.  God uses physical life  to teach us about spiritual life,  Someone just saved is called born again  and we are told to spiritually grow.  A grown person is physically larger than a new-born because they have added to their physical body by eating and doing other living things.  They also increase their 'quality of life' by learning to do certain skills.  And, the same is true for spiritual life.  In addition, we have a similar process with death.

The main problem that people have with the phrase death unto death  is that they have been taught that death  is a one time event when it really is 'an ongoing process of corruption'.  Think about partially spoiled fruit that still has some good parts to it.  The reason that people want to deny this true description of death,  is that they want to believe the doctrine of devils  (1Timothy 4:1) that they can enjoy a life of sin and then confess Jesus,  as they are dying, and 'go to eternal joy in Heaven with a mansion next door to Peter'.

While there are older people who make a profession of salvation, it is a lot smaller percentage of people than is true of children.  The truth is that a life of sin is an ongoing process of spiritual corruption and it becomes harder for someone to truly 'turn their heart over to Jesus  and accept Him as their personal Lord'.  Too many people believe the lie of: 'You are saved by your make a profession, even if it is a lie, and not by the person of Jesus Christ.  That means that you can make a profession while rejecting the personal relationship and Jesus Christ  has no choice but to forgive all of your sins and take you to Heaven'.  Jesus   warned us about this lie in Matthew 7:23 Matthew 25:41 and Luke 13:27, which report that He said: then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquityGenesis 4:1 Genesis 4:25 and tell us; Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived.  Therefore, the true Biblical definition of the word knew  includes 'personal intimate knowledge' and our reported verses tell us that 'Jesus Christ never had a personal intimate relationship with them even while they claimed a religious relationship with Him'.)

2Corinthians 2:15-16 teaches us the truth that death  really 'an ongoing process of corruption'.  That is why it is harder for someone to make a true profession of salvation after a lifetime of sin.

Our last consideration, about life,  comes from Philippians 1:19-20, which says: For I know that this shall turn to my salvation through your prayer, and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death.  (See the note for that sentence for more details on interpreting the sentence and chapter.  Use the link provided to access the note.)  This sentence exposes another lie from devils.  Satan can not cause saved to lose their salvation but can cause them to lose their everlasting rewards by convincing them that they do not have to serve our Lord Jesus Christ.  Look at the percentage of people who claim th be saved but never obey the command to do 'the Great Commission'.  They believe the lie that all Heavenly rewards are based upon salvation regardless of the level of service.  Look at what an adult can do compared to what an infant can do.  As mentioned, God uses physical life to teach about spiritual life.  Those who remain spiritual babes,  while in this physical life, will remain the same for eternity.  Those saved people who grow spiritually, by serving our Lord Jesus Christ  in this physical life, will receive promises which are denied to saved people who do not grow spiritually.  See the Promises sections in the Significant New Testament Events and the Significant Events in the New Testament documents.  Notice that every promise includes a requirement for us to do something before God gives us the promise.

Webster's 1828 dictionary defines live  as ', v.i. liv.  1. to abide; to dwell; to have settled residence in any place. Where do you live? I live in London. He lives in Philadelphia. '.  As can be seen in this definition, there is a lot to the word live.  Everything that we do until we face God we will give an answer for, and God will have a special concern for our influence upon His other children.

Easton's Bible Dictionary defines this word as: 'generally of physical life (Ge 2:7; Lu 16:25, etc.); also used figuratively (1) for immortality (Heb 7:16); (2) conduct or manner of life (Ro 6:4); (3) spiritual life or salvation (Joh 3:16-17,18,36); (4) eternal life (Mt 19:16-17; Joh 3:15); of God and Christ  as the absolute source and cause of all life (Joh 1:4; 5:26,39; 11:25; 12:50)'.

The American Tract Society Dictionary defines this word as: 'In the Bible, is either natural, Ge 3:17; spiritual, that of the renewed soul, Ro 8:6; or eternal, a holy and blissful immortality, Joh 3:36; Ro 6:23. Christ is the great Author of natural life, Col 1:16; and also of spiritual and eternal life; Joh 14:6; 6:47. He has purchased these by laying down his own life; and gives them freely to his people, Joh 10:11,28. He is the spring of all their spiritual life on earth, Ga 2:20; will raise them up at the last day; and make them partakers for ever of his own life, Joh 11:25; 14:19'.

The Morrish Bible Dictionary defines this word as: 'Life is that by which a created being enjoys the place in which the Creator has set it. God breathed into man's nostrils 'the breath of life; and man became a living soul.' Ge 2:7. Sin having come in, this life is forfeited and God claims it, saying, "surely your blood of your lives will I require; at the hand of every beast will I require it, and at the hand of man; at the hand of every man's brother will I require the life of man." Ge 9:5. This instituted capital punishment for murder, which law has never been rescinded or altered.  Scripture recognizes a difference between 'life' in a moral sense and 'existence,' as seen in the passage, "What man is he that desireth life, and loveth many days, that he may see good?" Ps 34:12. Here is a man desiring life, desiring to enjoy life. This answers the objection of those who, wishing to deny eternal punishment, say that 'living for ever' is only spoken of the Christian, as in Joh 6:51,58. True, but many other scriptures prove that the wicked will have an eternal existence.  Man, in his natural state, is regarded as morally dead in sins, and as needing to be quickened by the power of God; or as living in sins and needing to accept death in order to live in Christ, as in the Epistle to the Romans'.

Webster's 1828 Dictionary defines this word as: 'n.  1. In a general sense, that state of animals and plants, or of an organized being, in which its natural functions and motions are performed, or in which its organs are capable of performing their functions. A tree is not destitute of life in winter, when the functions of its organs are suspended; nor man during a swoon or syncope; nor strictly birds, quadrupeds or serpents during their torpitude in winter. They are not strictly dead, till the functions of their organs are incapable of being renewed.  2. In animals, animation; vitality; and in man, that state of being in which the soul and body are united.  He entreated me not to take his life.  3. In plants, the state in which they grow or are capable of growth, by means of the circulation of the sap. The life of an oak may be two, three, or four hundred years.  4. The present state of existence; the time from birth to death. The life of man seldom exceeds seventy years.  If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable. 1Cor. 15.  5. Manner of living; conduct; deportment, in regard to morals.  I will teach my family to lead good lives.  6. Condition; course of living, in regard to happiness and misery. We say, a man's life has been a series of prosperity, or misfortune.  7. Blood, the supposed vehicle of animation.  And the warm life came issuing through the wound.  8. Animals in general; animal being.  Full nature swarms with life.  9. System of animal nature.  Lives through all life.  10. Spirit; animation; briskness; vivacity; resolution.  They have no notion of life and fire in fancy and words.  11. The living form; real person or state; in opposition to a copy; as, a picture is taken from the life; a description from the life.  12. Exact resemblance; with to, before life.  His portrait is draw to the life.  13. General state of man, or of social manners; as the studies and arts that polish life.  14. A person; a living being; usually or always, a human being. How many lives were sacrificed during the revolution?  17. Narrative of a past life; history of the events of life; biographical narration. Johnson wrote the life of Milton, and the lives of other poets.  18. In Scripture, nourishment; support of life.  For the tree of the field is man's life. Deut. 20.  19.
